The Tor browser is an essential tool for law enforcement agencies when operating within the dark web. It enables investigators to access hidden services and maintain anonymity while browsing the web. However, it requires expertise to avoid accidental exposure and maintain secure communication.
The darknet markets, also known as the deep web, are a hidden part of the internet where illegal activities such as drug trafficking, weapons sales, and money laundering take place. These markets are not indexed by search .onion link engines and can only be accessed using special software, such as the Tor browser. With the rise of darknet markets, law enforcement agencies around the world have started to take notice and are working together to shut them down.
A number of startups now offer dark web scanning capabilities that allow for automated and scalable tracking of dark web markets, forums and dumps to Pastebin-like sites that don’t rely on individuals trawling such sites. There are many types of malicious tools and services being sold in the darknet markets, some of which we have already shared in part 2 of our cybercrime underground series. For example, in 2017, the European Union Agency for Law Enforcement Cooperation (Europol) launched Operation Black Hammer, which resulted in the arrest of 40 individuals and the seizure of €6.2 million in cash and virtual currencies. Similarly, in 2019, the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) and the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) announced the takedown of the Wall Street Market, one of the largest darknet markets at the time, resulting in the arrest of more than 170 individuals and the seizure of millions of dollars in cash and virtual currencies.
Number of Police Agencies Involved
It is difficult to determine the exact number of police agencies that are going after darknet markets, as many operations are carried out in secret and involve multiple agencies from different countries. However, it is safe to say that the number is significant and growing. In addition what bitcoins are accepted by darknet markets to the Europol and the FBI, other agencies such as the UK’s National Crime Agency (NCA), the German Federal Criminal Police Office (BKA), and the Australian Federal Police (AFP) are also actively working to combat darknet markets.
